How to Select Valve Materials Based on Ship System Requirements?

Release time:

When selecting valve materials, the core considerations are the medium, pressure, and temperature—these three factors directly determine whether the valve can withstand the conditions and perform reliably.

First, examine the medium. Transporting seawater? Bronze and stainless steel are the top choices, especially 316L stainless steel, which offers outstanding resistance to seawater corrosion. For fuel systems, cast steel or bronze is more suitable, while cast iron can be used at low pressures. For high-temperature steam, cast steel is the mainstream choice. If the medium is chemical, higher-grade materials like Hastelloy or duplex stainless steel are required.

Next, consider pressure. Cast iron or bronze suffices for low-pressure systems (e.g., domestic water). Medium-to-high-pressure systems (e.g., steam, fuel oil) must use cast steel for its superior strength. High-pressure systems demand even higher-strength materials like forged steel.

Finally, temperature considerations. Room-temperature systems offer a wide range of material options. High-temperature systems (e.g., steam) must use cast steel or heat-resistant alloys. Cryogenic systems (e.g., LNG) require cryogenic steel.
